20180515 First Night Out of Chicago

Our first night out of Chicago we spent in Chain o’ Lakes State Park in Illinois. Shunpiking along the way we found a pleasant community park in Arlington Heights, IL, for lunch and a walk around the park. After the cool weather and thunder storms of the previous night, it was good to take a walk in the sun and rejoice at the signs of Spring all around.

Upon arriving at Chain o’ Lakes in mid-afternoon, we scouted out a “primitive” campsite–picnic table and fire ring but no hookups. Back at the registration booth, the attendant told us about a fascinating house in Wisconsin. We’ll let you know in our next post what it is and if we decided to detour and see it.

Chain o’ Lakes SP is 5000 acres of mostly marsh with lots of lakes along the Fox river. We were delighted to see several Sand Hill Cranes and wondered if they had been among the thousands we had seen at Whitewater Draw in Arizona this past winter.
